When you can render fur on one object you can render it on all of them - who wouldn't try it?

For some reason, I feel odd working on graphics and effects while I’m working at the Dare “office”. It seems a bit like cheating – surely I should be working on something more practical and less self-indulgent – even when something graphics related really is the next task on our prioritised list. So, wanting to tackle something fun over the weekend, I figured I would also attempt something that might be useful for Pollen and look at rendering fur.

The effect wasn’t hard to achieve (an article on Ziggyware provided a good starting point) but changing the direction of the fur and whether on not the colours darkened along the strands created some interesting results.

Unfortunately the bees in game are clearly too small to benefit from being furry – as you can see above, the just look cluttered. However, on initial screen where you can select which bees make up your swarm, the models are far bigger. Hopefully in the final build we wont render fur on the glasses and hats though!
