YinYangYou at Neon Public

November 17th, 2009

IMG_2276Team Be were demoing YinYangYou at Neon Public yesterday. When we developed it as part of the week-long Next Level Dundee project I don’t think we really imagined just how many opportunities would follow so it was fantastic to be able to show the game to the public and get some feedback.

Look out for us at Dundee Winter Night Light on November 27th.

Re-thinking My Honours Project Topic

October 16th, 2009

3720871677_5134a85c87As you may have gathered from my previous post I’ve been having some doubts and concerns about my honours project topic for some time, and have continued to consider possible alternatives throughout the start of term.

Having completed further research, I strongly feel that one of these alternative topics in particular would be better suited both as an honours project and as something I personally would like to investigate. Although this decision is not yet final and requires much further refinement, I hope that completing the original worksheets and (potentially) receiving some feedback will aid me in reaching a hasty yet prudent decision.

Initial Research Question

October 6th, 2009

How can a non-strict programming language be designed to aid the generation of organic models?

After much thought, even considering changing my topic entirely, I’ve managed to focus my initial idea into a project which should be feasible within the (very limited) time available. As with last week, I’ve been provided some questions to help progress with the project, this time considering my research question.

Honours Project Commencement

September 24th, 2009

1189018851_33abd5066bAs many of you will realise, I am now entering my fourth year of university and a large part of this involves completing a substantial individual project. Since we have to use a blog to keep track of this (on top of handwritten notes, and the personal wiki I am coming to rely on) and share our progress, I’m going to be keeping my notes in a separate category here.

Depending upon how regular and how rough my updates become, I may hide these from my main blog at a later date. Either way, my honours project posts will always be available on their own Here.

As ever, any advice and feedback is more than welcome :)

Software Freedom Day Talk

September 21st, 2009

Well, as those of you who were there most likely noticed, I never made it to Software Freedom Day this year. Instead I was busy being ill, which I’m pretty disappointed about.

If anyone is interested, I’ve uploaded the slides from my talk on Free Software for Students which I was intending to present. They probably don’t make much sense without me talking over the top, and there are a few applications I would like to have mentioned but cut out for timing reasons, so I’ll try to write up a blog post on the topic.

The aim was to cover the types of software I find helpful, for example personal wikis and to do checklists that other students might not make use of yet, as well as suggesting open source alternatives for common applications such as Office. The one thing I really struggled to find was a good referencing tool – everything I tested was either limited to one platform, hard to use, or so difficult to get hold of and install that I wouldn’t have felt comfortable recommending it to anyone else. If you have any suggestions on that front, I’d love to hear it.

Anyway, apologies again for missing the day; I hope that everyone that took part had a really great time.
