A Sandpaper-Like Proposal Draft

October 20th, 2009

3008734547_f7893c27a0_b Having spoken to Henry Fortuna yesterday about my new project topic, I’m feeling more confident about its suitability. It was established both that the particular problem I attempt to tackle will have a huge attempt on the project overall, and also that a simulation of characters moving in a virtual world should be a feasible situation.

Although I haven’t had as much time as I would have hoped for to construct another research question and I realise my ideas still require a lot of refinement, I have a (very) rough first draft of my proposal below. Hopefully I can re-write and revise this based on any feedback I receive. It’s all text from here on in because this is serious business – photo thanks to Daniel Conway..

Re-thinking My Honours Project Topic

October 16th, 2009

3720871677_5134a85c87As you may have gathered from my previous post I’ve been having some doubts and concerns about my honours project topic for some time, and have continued to consider possible alternatives throughout the start of term.

Having completed further research, I strongly feel that one of these alternative topics in particular would be better suited both as an honours project and as something I personally would like to investigate. Although this decision is not yet final and requires much further refinement, I hope that completing the original worksheets and (potentially) receiving some feedback will aid me in reaching a hasty yet prudent decision.

Project Progress and Meeting

October 13th, 2009

I met with Dr Louis Natanson this morning to get some help pinning down an area for my honours project. This successfully abated many of the worries that I’d had about my chosen topic, although of course along with new suggestions come new concerns and considerations.

As I suspected, the research question I formulated previously was both too tightly focussed and somewhat misguided.

However, the original idea of improving the asset pipeline through a tool or language remained in tact and I was encouraged to regard that as a starting point for refining my research. I maintain some degree of hesitation regarding this as it will be challenging to uphold a technical focus rather than investigating the users and aesthetic aspects of this tool. I’m also anxious about the breadth of the topic, especially having been encouraged to research various types of procedural content rather than just geometry, which already seemed a vast and varied area.

Hopefully working through worksheet two again before progressing to worksheet three will help re-align and focus the project as I continue to read and research the surrounding area.

Initial Research Question

October 6th, 2009

How can a non-strict programming language be designed to aid the generation of organic models?

After much thought, even considering changing my topic entirely, I’ve managed to focus my initial idea into a project which should be feasible within the (very limited) time available. As with last week, I’ve been provided some questions to help progress with the project, this time considering my research question.

Honours Project Topic Idea

September 28th, 2009

Term has only just begun but already it is time to come to some decisions in terms of my honours project topic. I’m finding it tough as there are a lot of areas I’m interested in but don’t feel I have sufficient prior knowledge to pursue an honours project around, such as AI or networking. Meanwhile, there are areas with too much information, too little work to base research on, too expansive a practical project involved… At this stage I’m hoping that I can focus my project to one general area where I know there is a mountain of resources available, and narrow in my work in order to define a research question.
